Jay Cutler's physical abilities have never been questioned. That's what makes Michael Irvin believe there was a bigger problem with the quarterback when the Denver Broncos traded him to the Chicago Bears in April 2009.
"I said [when the trade was made] there is something [Broncos coach Josh McDaniels] has seen on film to let Jay Cutler go this way," Irvin said Thursday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "Maybe it's not on the field. Maybe it's the person. But you don't let guys -- real quarterbacks with the physical gifts of a Jay Cutler -- you don't let those guys go.
"There's no way you let them go unless you see something. And I don't know what it was, but you're starting to see things manifest on the football field that doesn't rhyme with the physical abilities you see Jay Cutler has."
Cutler forced his way out of Denver when McDaniels was hired to replace Mike Shanahan. Cutler was eventually traded on April 2, 2009 to the Bears for quarterback Kyle Orton, two first-round draft picks and a third-round pick.
