LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- If Jim Harbaugh is reportedly worth $8 million per year, how much do you pay Lovie Smith?
After all, Smith has 65 overall NFL wins under his belt and three division titles, plus one Super Bowl appearance.
Harbaugh has 58 total wins, but all of those came at the collegiate level with Stanford and the University of San Diego.
See the future dilemma for Smith and the Bears?
"I really don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about it, or worrying about it," Smith said. "I'm all for any coach getting as much as he possibly can, and I assume if some owner is willing to pay a guy a number like that, they're worth it. But for me, I don't spend a whole lot of time [thinking about it]. I'm just pumped up about what we're doing around here."
But the Bears will eventually have to start thinking about Smith's salary -- roughly $5 million per season. The coach is entering the final year of his contract, and if the Bears' results in 2011 mirrors 2010, Smith will no doubt feel entitled to a more lucrative deal.
"I can only speak for us," Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said. "It’s just like free agency, and when you see a player out there. Desperateness drives people to do things that you know they maybe normally wouldn’t have done. It’s a supply and demand business, but we don’t let that rule our thinking. We can only look at our parameters."
