LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears signed defensive end Nick Reed on Tuesday to a reserve/future contract.

Originally a seventh-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2009, Smith played 16 games for the team that year, posting eight tackles and a sack, in addition to returning a fumble 79-yards for a touchdown. But Reed sat out the 2010 season after the Seahawks waived him in the preseason.

Reed became one of several players signed by the Bears to reserve/future contracts in recent days. A reserve/future contract secures the players’ rights for the 2011 season, but with the current labor uncertainty, there’s no clear timetable for when any of those players will begin working at Halas Hall.
