BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Overreacting to an unofficial depth chart in the opening days of an NFL training camp is risky. With that warning in mind, the Chicago Bears decided to flip rookie first-round pick Gabe Carimi to right tackle during Monday night's workout, while second-year starter J'Marcus Webb handled left tackle duties.

"It's a little bit of an adjustment for sure," Carimi said following practice. "It's uncomfortable out there right now, so I just have to keep practicing until it's comfortable. When I got my technique down and got down [in the stance], I was making plays. [Just made] some rookie mistakes"

Carimi, the 2010 Outland Trophy winner, was a four-year starter at left tackle for the University of Wisconsin. He was a consensus All-American and voted Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year en route to being selected No. 29 overall in the 2011 NFL draft.

Webb, a 2010 seventh-round selection, started the final game of last season at right tackle.

"We had played him [Carimi] on both sides, first, when you have a rookie coming in you just want to see how they move," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. So we just feel like right now we want to look at Gabe on the right side. He can of course play both. But keep everything in pencil.

"We evaluated him quite a bit. He's going to be a good football player. The best thing for him to make improvements is to go against our defensive ends. Israel Idonije is a good player. Every time [Carimi] gets a chance to go against Julius Peppers, he won't play against a better player during the season."
