Third quarter: Bears 36, Vikings 10
But just as quickly, the Bears dashed away hopes of a comeback on the ensuing kickoff which was returned 98 yards for a touchdown by Devin Hester. The Bears tacked on an additional three points on a Robbie Gould 26-yard field goal with 5:44 remaining to run the score to 36-10 in favor of the home team.
Hester’s 98-yard return extended the veteran’s record for return TDs (16). Hester nearly scored again the next time touched the ball -- on a punt return with 8:38 left in the quarter -- but was run out of bounds at the Minnesota 38 after a 27-yard return.
But the runback set up Gould’s second field goal of the night.
In addition to producing fireworks on special teams, the Bears cranked up the heat on defense with pressure on Vikings quarterback Donovan McNabb. After sacking the quarterback once through the first two quarters, the Bears dropped McNabb four times in the third quarter alone.
Tight end Kellen Davis left the game with an elbow injury, but the extent of the damage wasn’t immediately disclosed. Davis was a late addition to the injury report on Friday because of the sore elbow.
