CHICAGO -- After watching him throw three interceptions, maybe you don’t want to bet on Caleb Hanie. But if you do, you’ll be giving eight points to the visiting Kansas City Chiefs.
Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesCoach Todd Haley said Monday that Kyle Orton will get a chance to compete for the Chiefs' starting quarterback job this week.
With Jay Cutler on the shelf, the Bears were an underdog at Oakland, losing 25-20 and failing to cover a spread that got to 4½ points before down to 3 by game time. Kansas City covered as a 10½-point home underdog Sunday night against Pittsburgh.
Both teams are 6-5 against the spread this season. While coach Lovie Smith enjoys informing his team when they’re underdogs, the Bears are 4-1 as favorites. The Chiefs are 6-2 as underdogs, winning four of those games outright.
Pretty much everyone has the Bears as 8-point favorites as of Monday afternoon.
“Chicago will be able to work around Caleb because they are a decent team,” Las Vegas Hilton sportsbook director Jay Kornegay explained to ESPNChicago.com in an email message. “Being home and it’s his second start should also help him perform better.
“The Chiefs cannot work around poor QB play, because they’re not a good team. Public perception still puts the Bears in a different class than KC. We don’t have too many people rushing the windows looking to bet the Chiefs … believe me."
But what if Kyle Orton starts for the Chiefs over Tyler Palko?
“Orton would be a slight upgrade but not much until he proves himself,” Kornegay wrote. “I would say a point at the most or maybe just a half point at this time.”
