CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bears will host former South Carolina wideout Alshon Jeffery on an official visit to Halas Hall this week, according to a league source.
Jeffery was considered one of the top receivers in the nation following the 2010 season when he led the Gamecocks with 88 receptions for 1,517 yards and nine touchdowns, which garnered the 6-foot-3 wideout All-American honors.
But Jeffery's numbers decreased during his final season at South Carolina (45-614-7) when starting quarterback Stephen Garcia was dismissed from the team in early October. In his final game for the Gamecocks, Jeffery was named MVP of the Capital One Bowl after he caught four passes for 178 yards, including a 51-yard Hail Mary grab at the end of the first half of South Carolina's 30-13 rout of Nebraska. He was later ejected from the game for fighting.
Jeffery arrived at the NFL combine in February and weighed in at 216 pounds, 15 pounds lighter than he was during his career with the Gamecocks. He later checked in at 213 pounds at his official pro day at the end of March, where he impressed scouts with 40-yard dash times in the high 4.4 to low 4.5 range.
One of the teams to express a high-level of interest in Jeffery has been division rival Minnesota Vikings, according to the league source. The Vikings hold the 35th overall choice in the second round. The Jacksonville Jaguars might also be in the market to select a receiver in the first two rounds.
Despite the recent offseason acquisitions of Brandon Marshall, Devin Thomas and Eric Weems, the Bears have spent a good portion of the pre-draft process checking out the top members of the 2012 class of wide receivers. The team's brass were present at the pro days of Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon, Notre Dame's Michael Floyd, Baylor's Kendall Wright and Georgia Tech's Stephen Hill.
ESPN NFL Draft Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has the Bears selecting LSU receiver Rueben Randle in the second round at No. 50 overall in his most recent mock draft.
