CLEVELAND -- The Bears increased their lead to 28-10 in the third quarter on a circus interception by rookie Greg McCoy and a blocked punt returned for a score by undrafted rookie Brittan Golden.

Jumping a short route by Browns receiver Josh Gordon, McCoy broke up a Thaddeus Lewis pass. The incompletion bounced off the back of Gordon’s leg, with McCoy catching the loose ball and racing 15 yards for the score. Officials ruled the pass incomplete, but Bears coach Lovie Smith challenged the call and won.

McCoy’s return came just before a 22-yard blocked punt returned for a TD by Brittan. Brittan scooped up the loose ball on a block by second-year linebacker Patrick Trahan.

The explosive plays made up for the club getting off to a slow start in the second half. Chicago’s opening drive of the second half stalled when Tashaun Gipson picked off a Josh McCown pass intended for Dane Sanzenbacher. The pick set up the Browns at the Chicago 45, and led to Phil Dawson’s 39-yard field goal on the Browns’ first possession of the second half, which made the score 14-10 in favor of the visiting team.

By the end of the quarter, running back Lorenzo Booker -- in competition with Arma ndo Allen for the third spot at the position -- had run for 81 yards, averaging 5.1 yards per attempt. Allen, meanwhile, had averaged 1.4 yards per carry on seven attempts, but contributed as a receiver out of the backfield with a team-high 5 catches for 51 yards and a TD.
