Illness keeps Bennett out of Friday's practice
By Jeff Dickerson
LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears wide receiver Earl Bennett missed practice on Friday due to an illness but is expected to return to the practice field over the weekend, according to Bears head coach Lovie Smith.
The Bears are counting on Bennett, along with Devin Hester, to assume a larger role in the passing game Monday night since rookie wideout Alshon Jeffery has already been ruled out of the Lions game because of a fractured hand.
The Bears also rested veteran defenders Brian Urlacher and Julius Peppers on Friday. Both were listed on the official injury report as sitting out practice due to coach's decision.
Meantime, Hester (quad), linebacker Blake Costanzo (thumb) and cornerback Sherrick McManis (hip) all had limited participation.
This marked the first time Costanzo had practiced since he underwent thumb surgery during the Bears' bye week. The special teams standout practiced with a heavy tape job on his repaired thumb but is optimistic he'll be ready to play against the Lions.
