"It's a hard situation to be in," Cutler said on "The Jay Cutler Show" on ESPN 1000. "I think backup quarterback is one of the best jobs and one of the worst jobs. It's great whenever the starter is out there playing and you can kind of just go through the week and help out where you need to help out. But it's a tough, tough gig whenever that guy goes down and you're expected to go in.
"He was expected to play at a high level, and I think you ask the rest of the offense and they didn't really give him a fair shot."
The Bears' offensive line struggled throughout the game, which is nothing new to Cutler. The Bears have given up 34 sacks this season, which ranks 31st in the NFL.
“I’ve been here for four years,” Cutler said. “You adapt your game. You do what you got to do. You got to move around. I think it’s kind of a reason I’m a little bit jumpy back there.
"It’s hard to predict when you’re going to be completely solid up front and when you’re not ... It’s hard to get into a rhythm. It makes life difficult. It really does. But those guys do the best they can, and we try to help them out.”
Despite the offensive line’s troubles, Cutler still thought the offense could improve and turn itself around like it did in 2010 to reach the NFC championship game.
“I don’t see why not,” Cutler said. “It’s a talented group. I know they work hard. I know they want to be very good offensive linemen. We got to help them out with some pass protection. We got to run the ball efficiently. We got to pick our spots where we’re going to take our shots passing game-wise, some play-action pass. We just got to be smarter.
“We got to get better. It involves all of us. It involves me, the receivers, the running backs, Mike Tice, all of the coaches, the offensive line. It’s a group effort. We’ve played well in the past. We got to get back to that point.”
The Bears’ offense has especially struggled in the past two weeks, including a 13-6 loss to the Houston Texans last Sunday. Cutler thought the offense’s woes were partly due to the competition.
“Playing a good defense, there’s a handful of them out there in the league,” Cutler said. “It’s a mixed bag. I have to play better. We got to do a better job preparing. We got to do a better job up front. It takes the whole group. It’s hard to pin down just one area. I think when you lose games and lose games on national television it’s magnified even more so. We just got to get back to work.”
