As a rookie out of Pittsburgh, DeCicco finished 2011 ranked No.2 on the team in special teams tackles (17), and entered the 2012 preseason seemingly a lock to make the final 53-man roster. Then in the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, DeCicco suffered a freak groin injury as me made a cut on the grass at Soldier Field that ultimately led to the team waiving him on Aug. 29 just two days before it made final cuts.
The groin injury was so significant DeCicco said he just recovered from it approximately a month ago.
"The first month or two wasn't that bad," DeCicco said. "But then when I got healthy and everything, I started doing the workouts and it started picking up more and more. It started to get a little more stress(full not being with a team), you know? But it worked out."
Given DeCicco's familiarity with the club's defense, he shouldn't have a problem stepping in as the backup at middle linebacker to Nick Roach, who will be filling in for injured starter Brian Urlacher. DeCicco ran into Urlacher in the locker room Tuesday and the veteran congratulated DeCicco on his return to the team.
"One of the big reasons I wanted to come back here (is) because I knew everybody here and I'm comfortable here," DeCicco said. "I know the system. This is the first defense, and the only defense that I've ever played linebacker in, and I really like the Mike position and what they ask of the Mike."
DeCicco is unsure about what the team might ask of him at this point, but he really doesn't care after sitting out football the past three months.
"I'm just trying to prove to them that they made the right decision in bringing me back," he said.
