Andrew Weber/US PresswireCortland Finnegan gets under the skin of opponents, but his coach loves him.St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher visited "The Carmen, Jurko & Harry Show" on Wednesday and discussed a variety of topics as he prepares to bring his 1-1 team into Soldier Field on Sunday to face the 1-1 Chicago Bears.
Fisher, the former Tennessee Titans coach, weighed in on the Jay Cutler controversy by supporting the quarterback, who was scouted heavily by Tennessee during his days at Vanderbilt.
"By the way your quarterback is pretty good, and people just need to back off of him," Fisher said. "He's a good player.
"You think Jim McMahon shoved anyone during a game? I've known Jay a long time, he's a good player. You guys are lucky to have him as your quarterback, and he's going to win a lot of games for you."
Fisher said "we were very close" to drafting Cutler, and when asked why they didn't, he responded: "You'll have to ask (owner) Bud Adams."
Fisher, a former Bears defensive back who earned a Super Bowl ring despite being on the IR list all year, also had a message for his old coach.
"This is what I'll say to Coach Ditka. I was told that Coach Ditka was critical of (Rams defensive back) Cortland Finnegan, and very recently here," Fisher said. "I would like Coach Ditka to know if he knew Cortland Finnegan he would want Cortland to be the first guy to walk off his bus. Because he would absolutely love Cortland Finnegan."
The message will be relayed to Ditka during "The Mike Ditka Show" on Thursday at 5 p.m. on ESPN 1000.
