The Hawks might be winning the game, but they were outplayed in the opening 20 minutes after turning the puck over more than a handful of times. No line or defensive pair was immune to the sloppy play with much of it coming in the Hawks’ own zone.
The Jackets registered 15 shots on net due to that generous play. The visitors had 10 shots but scored on two thanks mostly to Patrick Kane.
After a Nick Leddy turnover, Chris Campoli made a heads-up play, taking a hit to send a pass to the neutral zone where Kane and Jonathan Toews were off on a 2-on-1. Kane finished with a wicked wrist shot over the shoulder of Mathieu Garon.
Later, on a Hawks’ power play, Kane found Brent Seabrook for a one-timer backdoor score, but the Jackets responded after a point shot was tipped in front of Corey Crawford by Maksim Mayorov. The play was reviewed as Mayorov’s stick may have been above the crossbar when he tipped the puck, but the referees called it a good goal. It was Mayorov’s first goal of the season.
The two points in the first period by Kane give him 299 for his career.
