The Chicago Blackhawks trimmed their roster to 27 on Monday, sending five players to Rockford of the AHL.

Marcus Kruger and Brandon Pirri were among the notable names who were sent to the minors as they lasted until the final days of training camp before rosters have to be set for the regular season.

Defenseman Dylan Olsen also was sent down along with Jimmy Hayes and Peter LeBlanc. The latter two were recalled just for Sunday's preseason finale in Washington.

Kruger and Pirri were considered bubble players with Pirri having the stronger camp of the two. He had two, two-goal performances in the preseason while Kruger had a quieter camp as he adjusts to the North American game.

Barring a contract dispute, making the team out of camp will be 18 year-old, second round pick Brandon Saad who shocked all observers with his stellar preseason. His contract needs to be completed by a Tuesday deadline.

The Hawks have to be down to a maximum of 23 players by Wednesday at 3 pm.
