Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa scored his 400th career goal Thursday in a 3-2 Hawks overtime win over the New York Islanders. For good measure he added two assists, including on the game-winner.
"It's a great number," Hossa told reporters. "It means something. On the other hand I didn't really think about it too much."
If not for being No. 400 it might not make many highlight shows. He scored it on the power play as he centered the puck from behind the Islanders' net. It deflected off a skate and in the net.
"Was thinking 400 would be something you will remember, something [like] a nice one but I'll take this," Hossa told reporters. "It was a special game for him and his linemate, Patrick Sharp, who also had three points, including the game-winning goal.
"I saw it just sitting there and the goalie was down from making the save," Sharp said of the puck after a Hossa shot. "That was one I wanted to put in for sure."
Sharp scored earlier in the game on a one-timer after a feed from Hossa. The two were clicking all night.
"I felt from the beginning of the game we had some great chances," Hossa said.
So it was only fitting that when Hossa scored his 400th -- just the 85th player in NHL history to do so -- the other offensive star of the night grabbed the puck.
"I think Sharp did," Hossa said. "Sharpie is a stat guy. He knows all the stats. So right away when I scored he picked up the puck and gave it to me."
* With two goals Sharp has eight in the past seven games. He's had points in five straight.
* The Hawks won only 43 percent of their face-offs. Dave Bolland was just 7-of-19.
* The Islanders were 0-6 on the power play, including a near two-minute 5-on-3.
