CHICAGO -- It’s not the fact Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane is an All-Star that should make fans scratch their heads. After all, he’s 10th in the league in assists and 27th in scoring. He has 38 points in 43 games played. That might be All-Star worthy if not for the fact others were snubbed, starting with teammate Patrick Sharp.

“If anyone deserved it it’s probably Sharpie,” Kane said Thursday morning after finding out he along with Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa were named All-Stars for the game in Ottawa on Jan. 29. “He’s had a big season. I know he’s hurt right now, maybe that had some affect to it.”

Sharp’s injury kept him out of the All-Star Game, according to a source familiar with the situation. His 20 goals and 20 assists rank 18th overall in the league. But only two other players in the NHL -- Toews and Phil Kessel -- have as many as 20 goals and 20 assists. That playmaking and finishing touch adds another layer to Sharp’s season. Some guys are scoring, some are playmaking -- like Kane -- but not many are doing both.

“It’s definitely an honor to be named especially when you’re not having the season you really want to be,” Kane said.

At least he can admit he could be doing better. As good as Kane can be, doesn’t former Hawk Kris Versteeg deserve a selection more?

Versteeg leads the re-vitalized Florida Panthers with 17 goals and 22 assists and a plus-11 rating. Kane is plus-5. Versteeg will be watching from home just like Sharp, who was the MVP of the game last year.

“Every year you get to be part of that select honor,” Toews said. "Sharpie was the MVP last year so hopefully someone can step up and represent the Hawks the right way here.”
