Rapid Reaction: Wings 3, Hawks 2 (OT)
How it happened: Todd Bertuzzi won it with 38 seconds left in overtime after the Hawks tied it with less than a minute to go in regulation. Jonathan Toews scored on a tip-in of aMarian Hossa point shot as the Hawks' net sat empty. The visitors were dominated in the opening 20 minutes, and it haunted them for nearly the rest of the game as they played from behind all afternoon. Tomas Holmstrom scored on a redirect of an Ian White shot on the power play and then later Todd Bertuzzi came off the bench on a line change for a breakaway goal on a feed from Pavel Datsyuk. The Hawks finally got on the board late in the second period when Wings’ goalie Jimmy Howard misplayed a puck, giving Andrew Shaw an open net for the third goal of his young career. And then the Hawks really came at Detroit playing in the third like the Wings did in the first eventually getting the equalizer even after missing on a four minute power play.
What it Means: There is no excuse for the way the Hawks opened the game as evidenced by being outshot 21 to 4 in the first 20 minutes but kudos to them for the way they came out of the second intermission, taking the play to Detroit for much of the period. They were rewarded when Hossa tied it but trailing 2-0 after one set them back for most of the day. And a poor four minute power play took some momentum away in the third. Corey Crawford shined in the first and late in the game to get the Hawks to overtime but Detroit took over from there. As usual these teams played it tight most of the way despite those big momentum swings but the Hawks needed to realize how good Detroit is at home—they were 16-2-1 coming in—and have a better start next time in this building.
What’s next: The Hawks' return to Chicago immediately following the game for a Sunday night matchup with the San Jose Sharks.
