“Daniel Carcillo underwent successful left knee anterior cruciate ligament surgery today,” team Physician Dr. Michael Terry said in a statement. “The procedure went very well and he will begin rehabilitation this afternoon. We anticipate a full recovery with him returning to competitive hockey in six months.”
Carcillo was injured on Jan. 2 when he illegally checked Edmonton defenseman Tom Gilbert into the end boards, getting kicked out of the game in the process. Carcillo was called for boarding and was given a seven-game suspension for the hit. He finished serving the suspension on Sunday and was placed on injured reserve Tuesday morning.
The Hawks recalled forward Ben Smith from Rockford of the AHL to take Carcillo’s place on the roster.
Carcillo signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Hawks on July 1. He had two goals and nine assists before his season-ending injury.
