CHICAGO -- Here's a quick look at the Chicago Blackhawks' 6-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday:

How it happened: After Buffalo got out to a 1-0 lead, the Hawks scored six of the next seven goals, taking control of the game in the second period. They got scores from Andrew Shaw and Jonathan Toews in the first, both because of an active defense on the power play. Shaw’s fifth of his young career came seconds after a man advantage try ended while Toews’ scored his 25th minutes later. Jason Pominville’s second goal of the game briefly tied it at 2-2 in the second but then the Hawks pulled away with a Marian Hossa tally followed by a Jimmy Hayes score. Dave Bolland added a third-period goal after Hayes went between his own legs and back to Bolland for the assist. The Hawks weren’t done as Toews scored again on the power play, this time on a two-man advantage, to hand the Sabres their ninth straight road loss, a franchise record.

What it means: The Hawks didn’t let a desperate team hang around for long though the game was tied early in the second. Their scoring depth has become deadly with the additions of Shaw and Hayes. Both showed once again their skill and desire to go to the net and were rewarded. But this game was fueled by the Hawks' defense. They took shots from the point and initiated offense from their zone into Buffalo’s. Only Sean O’Donnell wasn’t credited with a point among defenders. Twelve Hawks had at least a point as the offense was as dangerous as it’s ever been this season. The Hawks improved to 28-13-6 on the season.

What’s next: The Hawks welcome former Hawks Brian Campbell, Tomas Kopecky, Kris Versteeg among others as they host the Florida Panthers on Friday.
