Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is “progressing” from an upper body injury and worked out in Chicago while the team prepared for its game against the Ottawa Senators Friday night, according to coach Joel Quenneville.
“Toews was in for a workout today and [Steve] Montador was skating as well today,” Quenneville told reporters after the team’s morning practice.
Toews has not been on the ice while missing the last five games. Quenneville wouldn’t commit to Toews joining the Hawks as they progress through a three-game road trip.
“I don’t want to get anyone excited so we’ll just say we’ll see,” Quenneville said. “We’re hopeful. Until we get him on the ice … we’ll know more [then]. There is progress there.”
Montador has missed the past 11 games with an upper body injury. There is no timetable for his return either.
Niklas Hjalmarsson practiced Friday morning but won’t play against Ottawa. He’s missed 10 of 11 games with an upper body injury.
“We’ll see how he is [Saturday],” Quenneville said. “He looked good today, progressing really well.”
The Hawks take on the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday and the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday. Ray Emery starts in net Friday against the Senators. Ottawa starts Robin Lehner.
