A quick look at the Chicago Blackhawks' 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Friday night.

How it happened: The Hawks got down 1-0 despite outplaying Ottawa early in the game. But they stuck with their game and took a 2-1 lead with two goals in the second period. The first one came on a delayed penalty with an extra attacker on the ice. Marcus Kruger made a pretty behind-the-back pass to Patrick Sharp, who put it on net, where Bryan Bickell scored. Then a few minutes later, on an actual power play, Marian Hossa wrapped a backhand around the net for a tally. The Hawks could have had much more, but Sharp missed on a penalty-shot try while Patrick Kane and Andrew Shaw also missed on breakaways. Hossa hit iron once and Andrew Brunette had several close-in looks that never got by Senators goalie Robin Lehner. The Hawks outshot Ottawa 39-25.

What it means: On the road against a hot team, the Hawks instilled their will until Ottawa finally broke. The Hawks trailed 1-0 after one period despite putting 17 shots on net. But they didn’t slow down in the second, using the man advantage on a delayed penalty and a power play to take over the momentum in the game. Kane, Hossa and Brunette played as well on the road as they did at home on Wednesday, combining for 12 shots. Kane kept feeding Brunette, who couldn’t finish, but the play of the trio kept the pressure in the offensive zone and away from goalie Ray Emery. But that doesn’t mean Emery didn’t make big saves. He did, and assuredly earned himself another start. The Hawks like to skate and they were able to in a big win to start the trip. It was huge.

What’s next: The Hawks play game No. 2 of their road trip in Detroit on Sunday afternoon.
