GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Chicago Blackhawks trail the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 after two periods in their Western Conference quarterfinal playoff opening game.

The Hawks lost all momentum in the period, after taking a 1-0 first intermission lead. A long shift by the visitors’ fourth line in their own zone led to a Taylor Pyatt score. The Hawks failed to clear the puck on several occasions as Nikla Hjalmarsson and Sean O’Donnell were caught scrambling. Eventually O’Donnell lost his stick and Pyatt tallied. That line and defense was on the ice for over 1:30.

The Coyotes took the lead after a delayed off-sides call on the Hawks led to Phoenix countering up ice where Antoine Vermette fired a puck by Corey Crawford.

The Hawks killed 0:28 of 5-on-3 time for Phoenix and then the subsequent 5-on-4 but couldn’t regain the momentum they lost after the poor shift by the fourth line.

The Hawks had a late power-play chance of their own but couldn’t finish on a couple of close-in chances.
