How it happened: The Blackhawks rallied from a 2-1 deficit after two periods by scoring three consecutive goals in the third period. Blackhawks forward Michal Handzus began the rally by scoring the game-tying goal 51 seconds into the third period. Bryan Bickell followed with another goal at 5:48 when he knocked in a rebound off a Jonathan Toews shot. It was Bickell’s fifth goal of the playoffs. Michael Frolik added the third goal when he scored on a penalty shot at 9:43. Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford bounced back from allowing a soft goal in the second period and made 35 saves. Damien Brunner cut the Blackhawks’ lead to 4-3 with 51.7 seconds left in the game. Joakim Andersson beat Crawford with a shot from near the blue line at 10:11 of the second period to give the Red Wings a 2-1 advantage. The Blackhawks’ Marian Hossa and the Red Wings’ Patrick Eaves also scored goals. Toews had two assists.
Player of the game: Crawford could have caved after giving up a soft goal in the second period, but he kept his focus and kept the Blackhawks in the game. He stopped 27 shots over the final two periods.
What it means: The Blackhawks have faced elimination in the past two games and have prevailed both times. The series is now tied 3-3. The Blackhawks seemed to be in trouble Monday after the Red Wings dominated play in the second period and had a one-goal lead. The Blackhawks shifted that momentum in the third period and have to be feeling good about their chances heading back to Chicago for Game 7. On the other hand, the Red Wings have squandered two opportunities to close out the Blackhawks. The Red Wings did go seven games with the Anaheim Ducks in the first round and advanced. The Blackhawks have never come back from a 3-1 deficit in franchise history.
What’s next: The series returns to Chicago for Game 7 at 7 p.m. CT Wednesday.
