SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews was held out of the team’s scrimmage Friday for precautionary reasons because of a lower-body injury, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said.

Toews participated in a morning practice Friday at the University of Notre Dame, but he did not play in the scrimmage which immediately followed.

“For precautionary [reasons], we kept him off for the game there,” Quenneville said. “It’s not serious, but we’ll see how he is [Saturday] and give him a couple days off the ice.

“I think it was kind of bugging him before. He went through everything [Thursday] and [Friday]. Not bad, but let’s be smart.”

Toews, who is entering his seventh season, had 23 goals and 25 assists last season. He won the Selke Trophy, which is given to the NHL's best defensive forward, and finished fourth in voting for the Hart Trophy for MVP.

Brandon Pirri replaced Toews and skated with Bryan Bickell and Patrick Kane on a line during Friday’s scrimmage.

The Blackhawks will continue training camp at Notre Dame on Saturday and Sunday. Their first preseason game will be against the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center on Tuesday.
