CHICAGO -- Here's a quick look at the Colorado Avalanche's 3-2 overtime win over the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center on Tuesday:

How it happened: The Avalanche's Tyson Barrie scored a power-play goal in overtime for the win. The Blackhawks dominated possession in the first period, but it was the Avalanche who found the net. Barrie put the Avalanche ahead 1-0 at 14:58 and Ryan O'Reilly extended the lead to 2-0 with a power-play goal at 16:00. The Blackhawks finally figured out Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov in the second period when defenseman Johnny Oduya redirected a shot by Brandon Saad in front of the net at 8:12 of the second period. Andrew Shaw tied the score at 2-2 when he cleaned up a Saad rebound at 7:27 of the third period. The Blackhawks had 88 total shots, including 48 on goal, to the Avalanche’s 37. Varlamov made 46 saves. Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford made 23 saves. Blackhawks went 0-for-5 on the power play.

What it means: The Blackhawks continued to struggle in overtime/shootout games. They dropped their 11th shootout/overtime game of the season and fell to 30-8-11 on the season. The Avalanche improved to 29-12-5 and now have a 2-1 season advantage on the Blackhawks.

Player of the game: Varlamov was hard to beat all night.

Stat of the game: Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews won 21 of 29 faceoffs.

What's next: The Blackhawks host the Anaheim Ducks on Friday. The Ducks defeated the Blackhawks 3-2 in a shootout on Dec. 6.
