The Chicago Blackhawks announced Wednesday they agreed to terms with defenseman Stephen Johns on a two-year contract.
Johns, 21, was selected by the Blackhawks in the second round of the 2010 draft. He played for Notre Dame the past four years.
Johns, who is 6-foot-4 and 233 pounds, had eight goals, 12 assists, 63 blocks and a plus-five rating in 40 games for the Irish this season. He had 15 goals, 42 assists and a plus-nine rating in 164 career college games.
“The thing with Stephen, when you watch him play at the college level, it’s his size,” Blackhawks assistant general manager Norm Maciver recently said. “He’s just so big and strong of a player at that level. He has a huge advantage in terms of strength.
“What he needs to work on is focusing on playing with the puck, simplifying his game defensively and learning the position more extensively. He can get away with certain things at the college level because of his physicality and size.”
