First-period wrap: Sabres 2, Hawks 1

By Jesse Rogers

BUFFALO -- The Chicago Blackhawks trail the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1, after one period at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo. And it could have been worse.

Buffalo’s Drew Stafford scored 14 seconds into the contest on the first shot Hawks goaltender Corey Crawford saw this season.

Minutes later the Sabres scored again, when Derek Roy put one home just in front of Crawford. It was Roy’s fourth goal of the young season.

Patrick Kane got the Hawks on the board, scoring from near the point after a nifty drop-pass by Duncan Keith. Kane had an animated celebration in front of his hometown fans.

A scary moment occurred with 5:43 left in the period when Niklas Hjalmarsson hit Sabres winger Jason Pominville from behind and into the boards. Pominville lay on the ice for several minutes and was carried off on a stretcher.

Hjalmarsson was given a five-minute boarding penalty and game misconduct, which means the Hawks will play the rest of the game without his services and he could face further punishment by the league. The Hawks were able to kill off the five-minute Buffalo power play.

Pominville gave a thumbs-up sign to the crowd as he was taken off the ice.
