1st-period wrap: Avalanche 1, Hawks 0

By Jesse Rogers

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks trailed the Colorado Avalanche 1-0 after the first period at the United Center on Friday.

The Hawks started out with a good pace to the game but Semyon Varlamov made some early saves while the Hawks missed on some close-in chances. The tide turned some midway through the period, and the Hawks were caught chasing the puck in their own zone.

On one sequence, it got worked to the point where Erik Johnson fired it on net and David Jones was standing in the slot for a tip-in goal. During that span when Colorado had the momentum, the Hawks went seven minutes without a shot on goal.

Andrew Shaw, in his second career game, is playing center between Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane while Michael Frolik skated with Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa.
