Hawks waiting on Saturday's outcomes

The Chicago Blackhawks have had to wait until the final day of Western Conference action to discover their first-round playoff opponent.

The top-seeded Blackhawks will play either the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild or Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round depending on the various outcomes of the three teams’ games on Saturday.


The Red Wings are currently in seventh place with 54 points and 21 ROW (regulation + overtime wins). They finish the regular season on the road with the Dallas Stars. Their game begins at 6 p.m.

The Wild are currently in eighth place with 53 points and 21 ROW. After losing 6-1 to the Edmonton Oilers on Friday, the Wild are on the road against the Colorado Avalanche. Their game begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Blue Jackets, who are currently out of the playoffs, have 53 points and 18 ROW. They host the Nashville Predators at 6:30 p.m.

The Blackhawks would face the Red Wings in the opening round if: 1) the Red Wings lose, Wild win, Blue Jackets lose, 2) Red Wings lose, Wild lose, Blue Jackets win, 3) Red Wings lose, Wild lose in overtime/shootout, Blue Jackets lose, 4) Red Wings lose in shootout/overtime, Wild win, Blue Jackets have any result, 5) Red Wings lose, Wild win, Blue Jackets lose in overtime/shootout, 6) Red Wings lose, Wild lose in overtime/shootout, Blue Jackets lose in overtime/shootout.

The Blackhawks would face the Wild if: 1) all three teams have the same result, 2) Wild lose, Red Wings win, Blue Jackets lose, 2) Wild lose in shootout/overtime, Red Wings win, Blue Jackets lose in shootout/overtime, 3) Wild lose in shootout/regulation, Red Wings lose, Blue Jackets win.

The Blackhawks would face the Blue Jackets if: 1) Blue Jackets win, Red Wings win, Wild lose, 2) Blue Jackets lose in overtime/shootout, Red Wings win, Wild lose, 3) Blue Jackets win, Red Wings lose, Wild win, 4) Blue Jackets win, Red Wings lose in overtime/shootout, Wild lose in regulation/overtime/shootout.
