Hawks donate to Washington tornado relief

By Scott Powers

The Chicago Blackhawks announced Friday they will donate $200,000 to the Washington Tornado Relief Fund.

The donation will aid the community of Washington, Ill. after the town was recently impacted by a tornado. The Blackhawks announced they will also sponsor a luncheon in Washington, Ill. on Nov. 27.

"Illinois is our home, and when one of our communities suffers a loss as tragically as the people of Washington did, we want to do all that we can to help them," Blackhawks chairman Rocky Wirtz said in a statement. "After seeing the devastation and speaking with [Illinois Governor Pat] Quinn, we realized just how much this donation can help those families get back on their feet again."

An EF-4 tornado touched down in the area on Sunday and reportedly killed one person, injured around 100 people and damaged 1,000-plus homes.
