Blackhawks to face Blues in first round

By Scott Powers

The Chicago Blackhawks finally discovered their first-round playoff opponent on Sunday.

On the final day of the regular season, the Blackhawks were locked into playing the St. Louis Blues in the first round. The Blues will have home-ice advantage.

The Blues-Blackhawks’ series will likely begin in St. Louis on Thursday. The Scottrade Center, the Blues’ arena, is unavailable on Wednesday because of a Miley Cyrus concert.

The Blues (52-23-7, 111 points) finished the regular season as the No. 2 seed in the Central Division after losing to the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. The Blues lost their final six games of the regular season. The Blackhawks (46-21-15, 107 points) finished third in the division. They completed their regular season on Saturday.

The Colorado Avalanche (52-22-7, 111 points) clinched the Central title with the Blues’ loss. Both teams entered Sunday with a chance to win the division. The Avalanche will play their final regular-season game against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

The Blackhawks had been locked into third place in the Central since Thursday and were awaiting the identity of their first-round opponent. They were anticipating the Avalanche for the last few weeks, but the Avalanche surpassed the Blues for first place on Thursday and remained there.

The Blackhawks went 2-1-2 against the Blues this season. The Blackhawks defeated the Blues 4-2 in Chicago on April 6 and 4-0 in Chicago on March 19. They lost to the Blues 3-2 in St. Louis on Oct. 9, 3-2 in a shootout in Chicago on Oct. 17 and 6-5 in a shootout in St. Louis on Dec. 28.
