DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Chicago Bulls general manager Gar Forman confirmed Monday that he decided not to renew the contract of lead assistant coach Ron Adams, who is a close friend of head coach Tom Thibodeau, but Forman said his relationship with Thibodeau remains strong.

"Tom makes the decisions on the floor," Forman said. "He's our head coach and I think he's as good as any coach in the NBA. I think he does a great job.

"Do I agree with absolutely every decision he makes? We'll communicate and probably not. But I'm going to support the decisions he makes and he's going to support decisions I make. Once they are made we unite and move forward because the goal is to continue to get this team better and compete for a championship as we move forward."

Adams was a key figure on a coaching staff that guided the Bulls to the best regular-season record in two of the last three seasons, which made his departure a bit of a surprise.

Neither Forman nor Thibodeau were going to talk about the move Monday when the Bulls introduced their top two draft picks at the Berto Center, but Forman relented and discussed Adams, albeit cautiously.

"I think with any type of personnel decision I think it's best left unsaid as far as why decisions are made," Forman said. "I don't think it does anybody any good to go into specifics and I think that goes for any personnel decision we make whether it's a player or anything else."

Thibodeau did not address the move. His only reaction to his friend's departure was in a Bulls' official release on the subject.

"Ron is a great friend, an outstanding coach and I will miss him," Thibodeau was quoted as saying in the statement.

Forman said that like any head coach, Thibodeau makes the recommendations on his assistants, but that he has the final decision on the moves that are made. He did confirm that the decision to part ways with Adams was his.

Forman denied the decision would cause any friction between him and his head coach.

"I think Tom and I have a very good working relationship ...," Forman said. "We're not always going to agree on everything. But at the end of the day I think we both have the best interests of the Bulls moving forward is what our goal is and we unite and move forward."

Forman said a decision has not been made on who will take over the lead assistant post. Speculation is that assistant coach Adrian Griffin could be promoted to job.

"The rest of the staff remains in place and under contract," Forman said. "As far as adding to the staff that's something we will be discussing here over the next couple of days and weeks how we will address that."

The Chicago Tribue earlier reported Adams would be let go.
