The NBA tried to talk Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose into participating in this year's dunk contest during All-Star weekend. But Rose, whose modesty may match his talent, doesn't see himself among the league's top dunkers.
"I can jump pretty high, but I'm not creative," Rose told ESPNChicago.com recently. "I'm not creative like some of them guys. I would just blank out in the dunk contest if I were ever in it. But I will never get in the dunk contest."
Doesn't he enjoy watching it as a fan, though?
"It's kind of like the same thing," he said. "But it's excitement. It's exciting just to see it."
In just his third season, Rose already has delivered several memorable dunks. The most recent came Jan. 10 against the Detroit Pistons when Rose took an alley-oop pass from Ronnie Brewer and threw it down with one hand. True to form, Rose said in the following days that he still hadn't seen a replay of it. It wasn't even the best one he's ever had in a game.
Rose listed what he considers his top five dunks for ESPNChicago.com. Click here to watch a video of the dunks.
So what exactly is the key to a great dunk?
"Being able to get it off clean," he said. "It's another where you're just dunking, but to dunk on someone, your biggest thing is finishing. Being able to get a clean dunk and not hurt yourself.
Rose became the first Bulls All-Star since Michael Jordan in 1998. Jordan was the last Bulls player to win the dunk contest in 1988 at the Chicago Stadium.
That won't change this year.
