Rose's UC return could come Aug. 16

By Nick Friedell

MINNEAPOLIS -- Derrick Rose likely will make his return to the United Center this summer, but it would be with Team USA and not the Chicago Bulls.

Rose is expected to go to training camp with a pool of 28 players in late July hoping to play for Team USA in this summer's World Cup of Basketball. If he plays for the team, Rose will be part of an exhibition game against Brazil on Aug. 16 at the United Center.

"It's great," Bulls coach and Team USA assistant Tom Thibodeau said Wednesday. "For USA Basketball, Chicago's such a great basketball city, I just think it's a natural [fit]. Hopefully Derrick will be participating, so I think it's great for everybody. Great for the city, great for our fans, great for USA Basketball. I'm excited to hear that."

The defending champion American team will train in Chicago on Aug. 14-15 before the game against Brazil. Thibodeau joked that Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski and USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo were on board with the plan to train in Chicago because of their close ties to the city.

As for Rose, he remains out for the season after tearing the meniscus in his right knee in November. Thibodeau, who has continually stated that Rose would be out for the season, said not much has changed as far as Rose's rehab.

"Just continue doing what he's doing," Thibodeau said. "He's feeling great, which is the encouraging thing. He's bouncing all over the place. The rehab's gone very well."

But Rose still is not taking contact in practice, and Thibodeau doesn't expect that to change before the end of the season.

"We're not going to push that," he said. "We're not doing a lot of contact ourselves right now. So at this point, it really doesn't make sense, but just continue on with what he's doing. Do his work, do his rehab, encourage his teammates, be engaged, he's done all those things and so that's been a big plus for us."

Team USA will also play exhibitions at Madison Square Garden in New York against the Dominican Republic on Aug. 20, and Puerto Rico on Aug. 22.

The World Cup of Basketball runs Aug. 30 to Sept. 14 in Spain.
