Illinois seized a late commitment from ESPNU Top 150 tight end Jon Davis on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound Davis announced his decision at a press conference at Eastern High School in Louisville. He chose the Illini over Louisville and Kentucky, his previous commitment.

Davis is the No. 138th-ranked player in the Class of 2011 and the No. 22 athlete by ESPN Recruiting.

“When we took the offensive staff down to Louisville to watch Jon Davis play basketball,” Illinois offensive coordinator Paul Petrino said, “it was great to see his athleticism on the court, too.”

ESPN Recruiting describes Davis as a “productive and versatile football player. He appears to wear several hats for his team and reminds us some of fellow 2011 prospect AC Leonard. Davis on paper has good size though on film he does not look as big as listed and if he carries his weight well. He does appear to have a good wingspan for his build. He plays in a Wing-T offense and will be involved in the running and passing game. He is a productive receiver with good soft hands who displays the ability to consistently catch the ball away from his body.”
