Ohio State's and Northwestern's football teams were among the 954 Division I squads honored Thursday with public recognition awards because of their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rate scores. These awards are given to teams with multiyear APR scores in the top 10 percent nationally of a given sport.
The top performing APR scores ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000, and the majority of teams honored achieved perfect scores.
The full APR scores for all teams will be released June 20. These reports will include any penalties for low-performing teams. Minnesota already released its four-year APR score of 932, just two points above the new cutoff line (930) that can result in scholarship losses and postseason bans.
Twelve FBS programs were recognized for the 2010-11 academic year. With two teams honored, the Big Ten trailed only the ACC (three teams) among the major conferences. The Big East and SEC each had one team honored -- Rutgers and Vanderbilt, respectively -- while the Big 12 and Pac-12 had none.
Ohio State and Northwestern both received public recognition awards for their APR scores last year, and Northwestern received the honor in 2008-09 as well. No other Big Ten schools have received the awards.
