ROSEMONT, Ill. – Here’s a quick look at DePaul’s 98-67 win over Austin Peay in the Cancun Challenge at the Allstate Arena on Saturday.
How it happened: DePaul created a double-digit lead within the game’s first 10 minutes and never looked back. The Blue Demons put full-court pressure on Austin Peay from the start and forced the Governors into 18 first-half turnovers and eight more in the second half. DePaul scored 31 points off turnovers in the first half alone and led 50-38 at half. DePaul finished with 16 steals.
What it means: DePaul bounced back after an embarrassing home loss to Gardner-Webb earlier in the week. The Blue Demons still have a long way to go before being ready for the Big East season, but they did return to the winning column.
Player(s) of the game: DePaul’s sophomore trio of Cleveland Melvin, Brandon Young and Moses Morgan all played a hand in the Blue Demons’ blowout win, combining for 58 points. Melvin had a game-high 26 points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Stat of the night: The Blue Demons attempted 78 shots and Austin Peay had 53.
What's next: DePaul plays its final two games of the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico. The Blue Demons will face Wichita State on Tuesday and either Iowa or Western Kentucky on Wednesday.
