A Big Ten first: Woman officiates NU-Rice

By Associated Press

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sarah Thomas became the first woman to officiate in a Big Ten stadium when Northwestern hosted Rice on Saturday.

A Conference USA official, she was serving as the line judge. Thomas became the first woman to work a major college football game when Memphis played Jacksonville State in 2007.

It's not unusual for crews from the visiting team's league to work a game. Rice plays in Conference USA.
