CHICAGO – Here’s a quick look at Oregon State’s 92-66 win over Chicago State on Wednesday.
How it happened: Oregon State put Chicago State away quickly and never let up. The Beavers jumped out to a 22-9 lead in the first eight minutes and extended it to 50-24 by halftime. Oregon State forced Chicago State into 16 turnovers in the first half while having just two of its own.
What it means: It was a successful trip home for Oregon State coach Craig Robinson, who grew up in Chicago and continues to recruit the area. The Beavers went 10-2 in its non-conference slate and now has the Pac-12 schedule ahead of them. For Chicago State's woes continued. The Cougars are winless in 12 games this season and have a 21-game losing streak dating back to last season.
Outside the box: Chicago State has taken its lumps the past two years. The Cougars have lost 21 games by 20-plus points the last two seasons.
Player of the game: Oregon State sophomore guard Ahmad Starks returned home to Chicago and didn’t disappoint his large fan contingent. In the opening half, he keyed Oregon State with 13 points, five assists and two steals.
What’s next: Chicago State’s schedule doesn’t get any easier as it travels to Cincinnati for its next game. Oregon State has the next week off. It opens its Pac-12 schedule at Washington on Dec. 29.
