Paul, Cooper, Cooley on Wooden list

By Scott Powers

Illinois senior shooting guard Brandon Paul, Ohio senior point guard D.J. Cooper, and Notre Dame senior power forward Jack Cooley, all Chicago-area products, were named to the John R. Wooden Award preseason Top 50 list on Thursday.

Paul, who attended Warren High School in Gurnee, Ill., was selected to the Big Ten third-team last season by the coaches and averaged a team-best 14.7 points. He scored a career-high 43 points against Ohio State.

Cooper, who attended Hales Franciscan in Chicago and Seton Academy in South Holland, Ill., was an All-MAC first-team selection last season and was the MAC tournament MVP after averaging 19.7 points and 6.7 assists. He broke the school's career assist record last season and is one steal shy of the school's steal record.

Cooley, who attended Glenbrook South in Glenview, Ill., was a Big East second-team selection last season and averaged 12.5 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.6 blocks.

Transfers, medical redshirts and freshman are not eligible for the preseason top 50.

The Wooden Award winner will be announced the weekend of April 12-13, 2013.
