Illini co-offensive coordinator Beatty let go

By Scott Powers

Illinois coach Tim Beckman announced Saturday that he will not retain co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Chris Beatty.

Beatty shared offensive coordinator duties with Billy Gonzales, who also coached the wide receivers last season. No announcement was made about Gonzales' position.

The Illini announced a national search for an offensive coordinator would begin immediately.

Beatty was hired by Beckman after spending the 2011 season as Vanderbilt's wide receivers coach and offensive recruiting coordinator. He was also previously an assistant at West Virginia, Northern Illinois and Hampton.

"Chris Beatty is an outstanding person and a good coach," Beckman said in statement. "His family will always be a part of our Illini football family. I wish him the best as he moves forward with his career."

The Illini went 2-10 overall and 0-8 in the Big Ten in Beckman's first season. Illinois ranked 12th in the Big Ten in points (16.7 per game) and total offense (296.7 yards per game).
