"After today's round, I think my pro (James Driscoll) would like to see me make it back to South Bend," Kelly, who is playing at a 13-handicap in the pro-am, told the San Jose Mercury News after Thursday's opening round. "I'm trying to stay out of the way more than anything. If I'm really good at golf, it means I'm probably not doing as well on the football field, as I should.
"If I don't have a built-in excuse for the round I had today, I don't think I'll ever get one," he said.
