Eastern Illinois announced Thursday its men’s basketball coaching finalists are Vanderbilt assistant David Cason, Oregon assistant Brian Fish, Nevada assistant Doug Novsek, Xavier assistant Kareem Richardson and Moberly Area Community College head coach Jay Spoonhour.
All five candidates will interview on campus in the next two weeks based on coaches’ availability with their current teams.
Cason has been at Vanderbilt for one season and was previously an assistant at Eastern Illinois, Tulsa, TCU, Manhattan and Notre Dame. He played at Illinois State.
Fish has been at Oregon for one season and was previously an assistant at Creighton, San Diego, TCU and Marshall.
Novsek has been at Nevada for six seasons and was previously an assistant at Illinois State, Nebraska, Indiana State and Texas State. He is originally from Lawrenceville, Ill., and played at Southern Illinois.
Richardson has been at Xavier for one season and was previously an assistant at Drake, Evansville, Wright State, Indiana State and Missouri-Kansas City. He is originally from Rantoul, Ill.
Spoonhour has been Moberly’s head coach for three seasons. He won the NJCAA national championship at Wabash College. He was also an assistant at Missouri, Saint Louis, UNLV, Texas-San Antonio and Valparaiso. He is the son of Charlie Spoonhour, a longtime college coach who passed away in February.
