After zeroing in on Matt Garza for a few days, the Texas Rangers acquired him from the Chicago Cubs on Monday for prospects Mike Olt and C.J. Edwards, right-hander Justin Grimm, and a player to be named later.

The Rangers' need for a starter had become desperate, as their alternative to acquiring Garza was calling David Clyde to ask if he had anything left. Garza replaces Grimm in the rotation, which would be something on the order of a 4-5 win upgrade over the course of a full season (in terms of wins above replacement), and maybe as much as 2 WAR from now until the end of the season.

This year, I've changed the format of my ranking of the top 10 prospects in each organization. The criteria for organizing these lists are the same, but I have included a little more explanation of the state of the system and discuss any prospects (top 10 and beyond) who might help the major league team this year.

I've also folded the columns on sleeper prospects -- players who did not appear in the global top 100 but might make a big leap onto the middle of that list next year -- into these organizational reports, mentioning more than one prospect per team where it's warranted.

Welcome to the 2013 ESPN Insider ranking of the top 100 prospects in baseball.

This is the sixth year I have done these rankings for ESPN, with Mike Trout topping the list the previous two years. With him and Bryce Harper now entrenched in the majors, there is plenty of turnover at the top of this list.

A complete list of the top 100 is below, and a more detailed explanation of the process in determining these rankings is found at the top of each of the four player capsule pages.
