Soto to DL just the latest move for Cubs

5/19/2012

CHICAGO -- The Cubs made it official Saturday, putting catcher Geovany Soto on the disabled list and recalling Randy Wells to fill out the bullpen.

It’s one of a flurry of moves the club has made of late, including sending Chris Volstad to Triple-A, trading for Koyie Hill, swapping out Blake Parker for Scott Maine and seeing Kerry Wood retire.

Soto had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Friday for a partially torn meniscus. His move to the DL is retroactive to Thursday.

Since catcher Blake Lalli was recalled Saturday when Volstad was optioned out, Wells was recalled to add to the pitching staff. Travis Wood is ultimately expected to take the roster spot that Kerry Wood will vacate and will take Volstad's spot in the rotation.

Manager Dale Sveum said Saturday that Wells will become the long man out of the bullpen and Coleman will be used in various roles, including an inning or two if a string of right-handed hitters are due to hit.

Forget bullpen consistency, the Cubs are just trying to find relievers who can consistently stay on the roster.

“We have a different team than we did a few days ago,” Sveum said. “A lot has happened in the last few days.”
