CHICAGO -- Mild-mannered, shaggy-haired and generously listed at 6-feet, Casey Coleman can now add part-time closer to his list of recognizable qualities.
After closing out Monday’s four-run victory against the San Diego Padres, manager Dale Sveum said Tuesday to add Coleman’s name to the mix of guys who will get a chance to finish off victories much more in doubt than that.
With Rafael Dolis now down at Triple-A Iowa and Carlos Marmol still not under consideration to close games right now, Sveum has compiled a closer-by-committee group that includes James Russell, Shawn Camp and now Coleman.
“Yeah, he falls into that category,” Sveum said of Coleman. “I asked him, I said ‘Have you ever got the last three outs in a game?’ He said, ‘Yeah, spring training.’ Well that ain’t Wrigley Field with 30,000 people on a 12-game losing streak. But he handled it well.”
Because the wind was blowing out Monday and the teams had already combined to hit eight home runs, Sveum essentially considered it a closing situation.
“All you had to do was to get a couple of people on and a routine fly ball was a home run yesterday,” Sveum said. “He did a nice job.”
The reality of the situation is that the Cubs haven’t needed a closer that often. Dolis recorded the club’s last save on May 14, and they have received just four saves the entire month of May.
