The Cubs and Pirates will make up their rained out game from Wednesday night this coming Monday afternoon in Pittsburgh. Major League Baseball rules prevent a team from playing more than 20 games in a row, and technically, a Thursday makeup would have been 21 straight for Pittsburgh.

Manager Lou Piniella was unsure after the rainout as to when Carlos Zambrano, who was scheduled to make his return to the rotation on Wednesday, would pitch next.

“I don’t know. We’ll sit down on the airplane and figure it out,” Piniella said. “We’re caught in some ways because [Ted] Lilly has had three starts against [the Pirates] and [Randy] Wells has pitched against them. So we’ll try to juggle this thing around. So we can pitch somebody different on Monday.”

Asked if Zambrano’s return to the rotation would be delayed until Monday’s make-up game, Piniella said it was likely the right-hander would be held out that long.

“I don’t think so,” Piniella said. “I think we’ll pitch him in Houston. Our preference would be to get Zambrano right on the mound pitching.”

Before Wednesday's rain out, the scheduled pitching matchups had been Carlos Silva vs. Felipe Paulino on Friday, Ryan Dempster vs. Roy Oswalt on Saturday and Randy Wells vs. Brett Myers on Sunday.

Wednesday’s game was canceled following a 3 hour and 12 minute rain delay. Nearly two hours of heavy rain caused water to collect on the outfield’s warning track and made the conditions unplayable.
