CHICAGO -- Like a porch light in the summer, Bryan LaHair was certain he would attract flying objects.

From the moment manager Dale Sveum called him Monday morning to let him know that he would get his first start of the season in the outfield, LaHair knew what would happen next.

And when the second White Sox batter came to the plate Monday evening it happened. Gordon Beckham drilled a ball toward the fence in right field with LaHair tracking it on the run as he crossed the warning track.

“I was kind of knew that was going to happen and I was kind of ready for it,” he said. “The ball was hit, I got a good read on it and took a good angle.”

And then as quickly as the game came to him on defense, it went away. LaHair didn’t get another chance, but he made it known that he wouldn’t be easy pickings out there.

“I’m ready for whatever they want me to do and however I can help the team win,” he said.

Get ready for more right field then -- with David DeJesus in center field and Alfonso Soriano in left -- although Tony Campana was there Monday as Soriano was in the designated-hitter spot. Manager Dale Sveum was asked how long the new look would last.

“After today probably every day,” Sveum said. “One way or another, depending on what we do at first base, I think LaHair will be out there quite a bit with DeJesus in center field against right-handed pitching.

The new role gave him no issues on the other side of the things either as he hit a two-run home run in the third inning, one of five Cubs home runs on the night. LaHair is now batting .363 with nine home runs and 18 RBIs on the road. He’s batting .267 at home.
