CHICAGO -- Other than saying first baseman Anthony Rizzo will be somewhere in the heart of the order, Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum wasn’t getting any more specific about his Tuesday lineup.
Rizzo’s highly anticipated Cubs debut will take place Tuesday against the New York Mets.
Rizzo batted .342 at Triple-A Iowa with 23 home runs and 62 RBIs in 70 games and was pulled from Monday’s game so he could make his trek to Chicago.
As bad as the Cubs have been on offense this season, Rizzo should end up with the lineup’s most prime real estate, but it won’t be that simple.
If he bats in front of a guy like Alfonso Soriano, the hope would be that pitchers take on the young Rizzo because they don’t want to face the proven power hitter. Or he can hit behind Soriano in the hopes that the veteran can do some damage, forcing pitchers to have to deal with Rizzo.
Soriano knows what he prefers.
“I would like to see him behind me because I’m the veteran guy,” Soriano said. “If he hits behind me, I think the pitcher will want to throw a better pitch to him. So I hope he’s batting behind and gets to do his job.”
Perhaps Sveum will take that into consideration.
“We still have to have more discussions on it,” Sveum said. “But I think when you bring somebody up like that, there has to be some protection. I think the three or four spot is legitimate because somebody can hit behind him.”
