ATLANTA -- Casey Coleman appeared to be saying his goodbyes to teammates in the locker room Monday night and would seem to be heading back to Triple-A Iowa.
Coleman had been a versatile addition to the bullpen and at one point was even being used in the late innings to protect leads. As the bullpen started to sort itself out when Carlos Marmol found his closing form again, Coleman was being considered as a spot starter.
That changed when Coleman gave up seven runs over 1 2/3 innings as a long man in relief of Jeff Samardzija last week against the Mets. He hasn’t pitched since and it’s Volstad that will get the starting spot the Cubs had considered giving to Coleman.
Coleman expected to go down when the Cubs activate Volstad on Tuesday.
